I’m with those who say drive over Tioga Pass if open, sightsee along Hwy 120 and Hwy 395 then stay in Mammoth Lakes or Lone Pine. Then next day get up early and drive through Death Valley to drive-see some sights before the valley get too hot (which will naturally be late morning to mid-afternoon time). You can also take it easy (spend more time at Tuolumne Meadows / Tioga Pass areas while you are still within the Yosemite National Park), not rushing to Las Vegas, and stay a night at Lone Pine or Bishop or Mammoth Lakes or Lee Vining or June Lake. There are other highways you can use without going through the hottest part en-route. You can, but don't have to, go through Death Valley to reach Las Vegas. If Tioga Road is open, it is a shorter distance to reach Las Vegas from Rush Creek, along with the added bonus of beautiful scenery along the Tuolumne Meadows and Tioga Pass, then on to Mono Lake / Mammoth Lakes areas. We won't know until about a week before the road's actual opening date - when the Yosemite Park makes the announcement. Tioga Road opening before end of June may be questionable. This year we have quite a bit of rainfall/snowfall so far. In the summer time, it doesn't need to be via Bakersfield either if the Tioga Road is open. Is it better to just drive all the way through ie 8 hours from Rush Creek (via bakersfield) and onto Las vegas to get all the driving done in one go or break up the journey via Death Valley (and have one night at the Death Valley Inn perhaps?) Thanks in advance for your imput.įor me, if I am not aiming on sight-seeing I would just drive straight on to Las Vegas. We will be travelling with two teenagers and one child (10 yr old) in a rental car that we hope is well maintained as we are a bit worried about the car breaking down with the extreme heat. We are pretty good with the heat (as I grew up in the hot Aussie outback) but just wondering if we are better to have a night at Death Valley or go the longer way around Bakersfield and have a night somewhere along that route? We have not visited the US before so this is all new to us. We are planning on staying at Yosemite for 3 nights then driving onto Las Vegas as we have been told that during late June/ early July it is very very hot in Death valley so best not to stay there the night and keep driving from Rush Creek all the way through to Las Vegas (we have 3-4 nights here) then onto Grand Canyon.
